Gear Magazines, enough now K.

by John on Nov.25, 2010, under Views and News

great, more new crap!Listen, if you fancy yourself cutting edge, and decide to start up a ” Gear Magazine” cause all us guys love that stuff, let my help you. Please go get a pencil, and jam it into your neck instead ok. Enough is enough. Everyone of these things is the same. Same new stuff showing up on the same day ( some times a few days later here and there) with the same stupid “Magazine” template. Come on people! How about making a unique site instead of just starting a business that has the word “Media” in it, then buying 10 websites and filling it with the same stuff as everyone else. Yea, you guys are one in a million for sure!! Good for you! Now of course, this is just my opinion and means little, but good lord, can we just try and think of something new? Geeze!

Creativity Gone Bye Bye….

by John on Nov.21, 2010, under Views and News

sketchingHas it happened to you? I’m in the middle of the longest dry spell ever. I am by no means artsy, but I love my photography, and love playing guitar. Yet, for months now I feel I’ve lost it. I’ve taken my new camera out 30 times and come home with nothing. My guitars I feel I should just sell and let someone with some desire enjoy. Earlier this week it really hit home. I spent a whole day staring at this screen finding nothing to write about. I couldn’t come up with a damn thing. So I decided to take the week off  from GCH, photography, photoshop and all my usual undertakings. Instead of trying to think of that next picture or blog post, I thought I’d focus on something new and different.

I headed off to the library and instead of dashing in, grabbing a book and dashing out, I sat down. I was doing some research on design for this page, and sat by the second floor window. It overlooks part of the main street of our little town. I was surprised at how relaxed I became. I enjoyed getting away from this desk so much, every morning now I make myself a coffee, and head to the library for a couple of hours. This new ritual has been a breath of fresh air. I recommend everyone that hasn’t hung out at the library in years, go and try it. It’s much more fun when you don’t have to!

I also felt the need to learn something new. Something I’ve never had any interest in I thought would be best. Really shake things up some and take myself in a new direction. I decided, while sitting reading at the library, that I would learn how to draw, or sketch. Now, I have never been able to sketch, or had a desire for this artistic endeavour. Perfect! I borrowed a “how to” book last week and am really enjoying it. I’ve actually surprised myself and created a couple of decent sketches! Wow, suddenly I’m feeling creative again! I’m starting to feel like a new man! Go figure, but I feel great for the first time in ages!

A New Smile For John

by John on Nov.10, 2010, under Guy Stuff

teeth toonAll my friends know that my teeth are.. lets say… not very good. You will have a hard time finding a picture of me actually smiling. In fact, I haven’t smiled in a picture for years and years. And I’m talking 20. Well, Friday is a really big day for me. Friday I’m heading to the hospital to get them fixed…uh….replaced. Just the uppers, apparently my Dentist thinks the lowers are worth saving. I prodded him to take them all, but he thinks he can get the lowers fixed up ok. Let me translate that. If he pulls them all, there’s no more money to be made. You know what I mean. Regardless, Friday is a big day! I’m dreaming of waking up and seeing all of you and actually smiling naturally. Not always trying to hide the disrepair. Not hiding my smile if I’m trying to close a photography job, or have a child ask me what’s wrong with my teeth. Jan says it was never embarrassing for her, but how could it not have been. She’s a sweety. Anyway, as long as I don’t wake up more retarded with the wrong size teeth and a woody in the recovery room, I’m going to be one happy guy!

Dove Men+Care….not getting it

by The Guys on Nov.09, 2010, under Views and News

DoveI’ve been seeing the commercials for “Dove Men+Care” lately and have to wonder what they were thinking. I gather they must be competing with Axe, but am I the only guy that sees a flaw in the marketing here? I have to wonder if they listen to the guys working there as much as the women. Did they survey men before the launch of this line? Not properly if they wanted to make a bunch of money. Here’s how Guys Clubhouse would have done things.

  • Guy sits at table across from Dove surveyor
  • Surveyor pulls out two beer bottles
  • One bottle is labeled Dove. The other Hawk ( for example )
  • Guy is asked to taste test both
  • Surveyor records which bottle guy reaches for first

I promise you, it won’t be the Dove bottle. I think you see what I mean here. Start a new company, give it a manly name, then at the bottom of the bottle in finer print write “Owned by Dove”. I have no idea what ” Men + Care ” is about. I would get “Care for Men”, or even “Man Care” maybe, but “Men + Care”, I know it’s to mean the same, but I just don’t get it. And please, take the picture of the dove off the bottle too. Geeze! Any man knows that when your standing in an aisle full of strange new male products, and there’s one with “Dove” at the top and another with “Axe” at the top, you’re walking out of there with the Axe!  Dove is a great brand name and product. The marketing is clearly for wives not guys though. Which is fine if your married and don’t shop I guess.
