Blekko, the new search engine
by John on Dec.02, 2010, under Computing
First, I’ve been working behind the scenes a bit for a week or so. I hope all 5 of you guys have noticed a few changes. I’m hoping things are a bit easier on the eye’s than before, so let me know in the comments K.
Has anyone been watching this new search engine Blekko? I have to say, it seems quite good. Now, I’ll be honest here, don’t really get the “slash tag” stuff yet, but I’m working on it. The regular search is fast and does yield different results than google, which, I don’t know, is that good? I’m feeling like it is. Blekko may have the potential to really change how we search, I mean if you own a website, you want to check out Blekko. There are no secrets, your SEO info is right there for yea. Actually, on their about page, you’ll find this, hope your sitting down!
web search bill of rights
1. Search shall be open
2. Search results shall involve people
3. Ranking data shall not be kept secret
4. Web data shall be readily available
5. There is no one-size-fits-all for search
6. Advanced search shall be accessible
7. Search engine tools shall be open to all
8. Search & community go hand-in-hand
9. Spam does not belong in search results
10. Privacy of searchers shall not be violated
I know, crazy talk! If you use the slash tags, you would search like this:
wheat beer / homebrew
This gives you higher quality search results which is great! No spam sites or anything. I’m still playing with it, but I find it fun! On a side note, does anyone use Bing or Yahoo? Just wondering. If you do, educate the clubhouse as to why and help us out K.
So go take a peek at Blekko and see what you think. It’s a nice change I find.

Gear Magazines, enough now K.
by John on Nov.25, 2010, under Views and News
Listen, if you fancy yourself cutting edge, and decide to start up a ” Gear Magazine” cause all us guys love that stuff, let my help you. Please go get a pencil, and jam it into your neck instead ok. Enough is enough. Everyone of these things is the same. Same new stuff showing up on the same day ( some times a few days later here and there) with the same stupid “Magazine” template. Come on people! How about making a unique site instead of just starting a business that has the word “Media” in it, then buying 10 websites and filling it with the same stuff as everyone else. Yea, you guys are one in a million for sure!! Good for you! Now of course, this is just my opinion and means little, but good lord, can we just try and think of something new? Geeze!
Cool Guy Stuff!

Not that I’m getting you anything, but man is that new thingy I made going to look great on ya! I know, your all like ” John, wtf , we’re going to look so good”. I know, it’s just what I do my friend. It’s just what I do!
Creativity Gone Bye Bye….
by John on Nov.21, 2010, under Views and News
Has it happened to you? I’m in the middle of the longest dry spell ever. I am by no means artsy, but I love my photography, and love playing guitar. Yet, for months now I feel I’ve lost it. I’ve taken my new camera out 30 times and come home with nothing. My guitars I feel I should just sell and let someone with some desire enjoy. Earlier this week it really hit home. I spent a whole day staring at this screen finding nothing to write about. I couldn’t come up with a damn thing. So I decided to take the week off from GCH, photography, photoshop and all my usual undertakings. Instead of trying to think of that next picture or blog post, I thought I’d focus on something new and different.
I headed off to the library and instead of dashing in, grabbing a book and dashing out, I sat down. I was doing some research on design for this page, and sat by the second floor window. It overlooks part of the main street of our little town. I was surprised at how relaxed I became. I enjoyed getting away from this desk so much, every morning now I make myself a coffee, and head to the library for a couple of hours. This new ritual has been a breath of fresh air. I recommend everyone that hasn’t hung out at the library in years, go and try it. It’s much more fun when you don’t have to!
I also felt the need to learn something new. Something I’ve never had any interest in I thought would be best. Really shake things up some and take myself in a new direction. I decided, while sitting reading at the library, that I would learn how to draw, or sketch. Now, I have never been able to sketch, or had a desire for this artistic endeavour. Perfect! I borrowed a “how to” book last week and am really enjoying it. I’ve actually surprised myself and created a couple of decent sketches! Wow, suddenly I’m feeling creative again! I’m starting to feel like a new man! Go figure, but I feel great for the first time in ages!
