Wow, did I ever get a nasty virus!!
by John on Feb.27, 2011, under Computing
Yikes! Well, I went to my computer a few days ago and found it had rebooted and was waiting for me to sign in. I thought that was odd as the power hadn’t gone out but, what ever,I signed in, only to find my computer was now fd. I mean big time Fd!! The worst I have ever seen! I unplugged it from the Internet right away and am quite pissed off right now. What ever I have will not even let me install the programs to be rid of this thing. I’ve even renamed the programs but this thing is smart! So, what to do? First, thanks to Steph for this old IBM “ThinkPad”! I actually use it all the time and right now it’s a life saver! My main machine is not dead, but it will take 5 to 10 minutes to open a file or program. I need to back everything up asap. I usualy do back up stuff to a disk, but at this point what’s backed up and what isn’t is a good question. I figure I should backup everything from scratch. Time for an external hard drive. Now, let me say I do not like shopping at Staples because I find the one up here doesn’t usually have what I’m looking for. For some reason, if they do not have what’s in the sales flier, they are happy to order it in for yea, as long as you pay up front. What? I know. I was like, “Dude, it’s your sales flier, why do I have to pay up front?” I just left that day. Today friends, was a door crasher! I was ready! I pounded my elbows against wooden beams for 3 days to toughen them up. I did the Steven Segal acupuncture with the incense burning on the ends of the needles! I even refused to make love to my wife in case it made me a tad weeker! My goal was the HP 2 TB “Simple Save” hard drive for $99.00!! I know, I knew it would be a battle but I trained hard that week! I figured they open at ten, so I’ll get there at 8! After waking up at 9:45 and racing to the mall, I was happy there were only 200 people ahead of me. Strangely, it was ok though, it wasn’t like Walmart. When I got there they gave me a coupon for the HP “Simple Save”, then I got in line and sure enough, received the “Simple save”! I even got the 16 gig usb for 12 bucks! My point here is that I didn’t need any elbows, everything was quite organized, and for the first time I actually enjoyed shopping at Staples. BTW, as I type this, the hard drive is 44% done backing up my files. Hope I’ll have things running again in a couple of days! K see ya

Making Another Wordpress Site
by John on Jan.28, 2011, under Computing
Well an old friend contacted me a week or so ago, and asked for my help with his crappy site. He didn’t want his site to look crappy, it happened when he lost a database that was stored locally and it wasn’t backed up to a disk. Someone he knew threw something together and thats what he ended up with. He was good and said I could use his “Dreamweaver” program to make him the site he needs. Like we all don’t have Dreamweaver yea know. I explained and he understood that he would need to study or get some schoolin if he intended to maintain the site, even though Dreamweaver is not that hard, web stuff is not his bag. So, as I have no intention of maintaining it for him. I recommended Wordpress. He thought that would be fine so away we went searching templates which I love to do. Thing about that is you can search for a couple of weeks there are so many! So, long story longer, he found quite a nice template. It has a few issues we’ll work around but it looks good! I’ve put some of his content on it and got the galleries started for him and he’ll learn to maintain it shortly. Anyway, we’re working on it and having fun so check it out. www.freetimefighters.com

Blekko, the new search engine
by John on Dec.02, 2010, under Computing
First, I’ve been working behind the scenes a bit for a week or so. I hope all 5 of you guys have noticed a few changes. I’m hoping things are a bit easier on the eye’s than before, so let me know in the comments K.
Has anyone been watching this new search engine Blekko? I have to say, it seems quite good. Now, I’ll be honest here, don’t really get the “slash tag” stuff yet, but I’m working on it. The regular search is fast and does yield different results than google, which, I don’t know, is that good? I’m feeling like it is. Blekko may have the potential to really change how we search, I mean if you own a website, you want to check out Blekko. There are no secrets, your SEO info is right there for yea. Actually, on their about page, you’ll find this, hope your sitting down!
web search bill of rights
1. Search shall be open
2. Search results shall involve people
3. Ranking data shall not be kept secret
4. Web data shall be readily available
5. There is no one-size-fits-all for search
6. Advanced search shall be accessible
7. Search engine tools shall be open to all
8. Search & community go hand-in-hand
9. Spam does not belong in search results
10. Privacy of searchers shall not be violated
I know, crazy talk! If you use the slash tags, you would search like this:
wheat beer / homebrew
This gives you higher quality search results which is great! No spam sites or anything. I’m still playing with it, but I find it fun! On a side note, does anyone use Bing or Yahoo? Just wondering. If you do, educate the clubhouse as to why and help us out K.
So go take a peek at Blekko and see what you think. It’s a nice change I find.
Why do I Blog
by John on Nov.05, 2010, under Computing, Views and News
We all hope our blogs will help us. We guys hope in some way, we’ll further ourselves financially or otherwise, but the truth is it’s like winning the lottery. So why do we bother? Why take all the time to set these things up, and try to come up with some sort of content? Stuff we think someone else will also enjoy. Good content is a killer. It makes and breaks us. I think we often sell ourselves short, thinking we may not have much to offer. We think this because our traffic isn’t what we hope for. So then, why carry on? I think it’s the hobby that we enjoy. This site I’ve tried to make money with several times. I’ve been able to increase readership, but to no avail. No cash or offers to write or do anything for anyone. So why do I still sit here and type you ask? Because I like it. I do have some people that visit here often. Let’s call them friends and family. Yes it’s true, they don’t leave comments, even after my prodding! But lets face it, some people just don’t like commenting. That’s fine with me. It actually took me quite a long time to get comfortable at commenting. Even if they didn’t pop in, I’d really enjoy my site. I can’t imagine not being able to sit down here and just throw my silly thoughts out there! Sometimes it sucks not having as many readers as “www.tech….. whatever”, but what the hell. This is my spot just for me, and a nice hobby I must say. Yes , I have another site, but it will never be as much fun as this one. Enjoy your blogs everyone, and keep on writing all the stuff you mistakingly think we don’t enjoy!
Great Free Programs #3
by John on Oct.21, 2010, under Computing
Comodo Fire Wall has saved my butt several times, and protected my pc from malware and unwanted registry changes. You’ll spend a week teaching Comodo what is allowed and what isn’t. A little patience is needed as it learns, but afterward it will run quietly in the background alerting you when necessary. When alerted, you will have several options of what action to take. This firewall is very easy to configure, and is perfect for people with little experience setting up such a program.
Comodo Features:
Defends your PC from Internet attacks
Control what files run on your PC
Prevents malware from being installed
Auto Sandbox Technology™
Cloud based Behaviour Analysis
Cloud based Behaviour Whitelisting
Award winning & highly rated Firewall
I’ve been using Comodo for several years and am quite comfortable stating, this program is a must have.
