How to make a Portable Application
by John on Jul.04, 2010, under Computing
This is simple and I thought you guys might enjoy it. It should work for most any program but I can’t guarantee it. I also can’t remember where I learned this but I’ll try to so I can give credit where credit is due. Just follow this step by step. It’s really quite easy. You need two free tools.
Just get the free trial of Winrar ( if you don’t already have it ) . Universal Extractor is free and can be found at www.legroom.net. So go ahead and install those and lets rock!!
a) Find your favorite program.
b) Make a new file where you like, and name it. (ie “my File”).
c) Now right click on the setup file of the program you’d like to be portable, and pick “extract with uniextract to a subdirectory”. Extract it into the file you just made.
d) Open the new file you made ( “my file”), and find the .exe file that runs the app. You should see a bunch of files there. Highlight all these files. ( Note: if you only see 1 file, then repeat step (c) on this file. Now you should see several files. Highlight them all).
e) Right click and choose ” add to archive”. Name your archive and select “create SFX archive”. Choose “best” under the category “compression method”.
f) Click the advance tab. Click SFX options. Now type the name of your executable in “run after exraction” under the “setup program category”.
Almost done!
g) In the “Modes tab” click “unpack to temporary folder and hide all”.
h) In the “Update tab” click ”overwrite all files”. Click ok and that’s it.
You’ll now see a single self extracting file that is the .exe . You can copy this to your memory stick or external hard drive and use it anywhere. cool eh!
Great Free programs #2
by John on Jul.04, 2010, under Computing
I have to pick Filezilla as one of the best FTP programs out there. The interface is quite simple and you’ll find yourself dragging and dropping, shuffling and renaming files in no time. If you’re managing multiple sites, you’ll love it’s Quick Connect function, and with several options for a secure connection, you’ll be uploading and downloading files without a worry. As a long time user I can say this program is stable, easy to use and will do almost everything you would find in a paid for application. I would say Filezilla is free must have program.
Opera 10.50 beta
by The Guys on Feb.23, 2010, under Computing
After reading Opera had released a new beta last Thursday and it was reported to be super fast, I had to download and try it. I’ve always thought Opera to be an incredible browser and people, this beta is a rocket!! Hold on, let me backup for a second.
I used Opera for about a year. ( see my previous post here ) I loved my Opera. I think it’s fantastic the way the email has been integrated. The security features are good. The interface is easy enough and skinning is simple ( although some cooler skins would be nice ). I could go on for an hour about why I liked that program, but let’s get to the meat of things here. Opera seemed to get slower and slower with every update. When we updated to 10.10, it became what we considered unusable. Yes, of course it was usable. But for us guys, needing instant gratification, it was over. I changed to firefox. It is faster than Opera 10.10, but other than that, it doesn’t really excite me. Which brings me back to Opera 10.50 beta.
It was very unstable as is to be expected with a new beta. And I only used it for a short time because when I tried to skin it, well, let’s say it didn’t like it. But holly sh..t, it was fast. I mean, the fastest I HAVE EVER SEEN! I’m not sure the average computer user would want to download this right now, and if you do, I’d say try it without the skins. But I am very excited after taking this for a spin. Going from something so slow to this really blew me away. In a few months, I’ll be putting Firefox to bed, and once again be using the best Browser!! Opera.
